Customer profile (jobs, pains, gains) and value map (products, pain relievers, gain creators) — achieving product-market fit.
The Value Proposition Canvas (VPC) by Alexander Osterwalder is a tool that ensures your product or service fits your customer's specific needs. It has two sides that must achieve "fit" to have a viable product.
What is the customer trying to accomplish? Jobs can be:
| Job Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Functional | Specific task to complete | "Write a report faster" |
| Social | How they want to be seen | "Look like an expert to my boss" |
| Emotional | Feeling they want | "Feel confident about my decisions" |
| Supporting | Buying, consuming, ending | "Compare options before buying" |
Key question: What is the job-to-be-done — the progress the customer is trying to make in their life or work?
Negative experiences, risks, or obstacles before, during, or after the job:
| Pain Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Undesired outcomes | Task takes too long, results are inaccurate |
| Obstacles | Steep learning curve, requires specialized knowledge |
| Risks | Fear of losing money, looking incompetent, data breach |
| Annoyances | Clunky UI, too many steps, requires multiple tools |
Rate pains from extreme to moderate. Focus your value prop on extreme pains first.
Benefits and outcomes customers want:
| Gain Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Required gains | Baseline that must be met (product must work) |
| Expected gains | Standard features customers assume exist |
| Desired gains | Would love but don't expect (bonus) |
| Unexpected gains | Delights they didn't know they wanted |
The list of what you offer — not what it does, but the product/service itself:
Specifically describe how your product eliminates or reduces customer pains:
Pain relievers should map directly to pains in the customer profile.
Specifically describe how your product produces outcomes and benefits customers want:
Fit occurs when your value map addresses the most important jobs, pains, and gains of your customer profile.
| Fit Type | When It Happens |
|---|---|
| Problem-Solution Fit | You have evidence your product addresses real jobs/pains/gains |
| Product-Market Fit | Customers buy, use, and tell others about your product |
| Business Model Fit | Product scales profitably |
| Purpose | Tool |
|---|---|
| Understand your customer deeply | Customer Profile (VPC right side) |
| Design your offer to match the customer | Value Map (VPC left side) |
| Map the overall business model | Business Model Canvas |
| Test startup assumptions | Lean Canvas |
